Understanding Prickly heat –  Prickly heat, or miliaria, is a common skin disorder, especially in tropical countries. This skin disorder often occurs in children. Prickly swelling occurs due to clogging of the sweat glands.

This sweat gland obstruction will cause complaints of red spots and itchy skin complaints. Miliaria can occur in any part of the body, but miliaria usually occurs in the face, neck, and back.

Diagnosis of Prickly heat

The diagnosis of prickly heat is determined based on medical interviews and physical examination. In the medical interview will get information in the form of an itchy skin complaint, history of sweating, the use of thick clothes and lack of personal hygiene.

On physical examination can be found redness, and papule (nodule) skin. In mild prickly heat, the appearance of white, watery, and shiny nodules without itching. Meanwhile, in prickly heat sweat, visible red nodule, itchy, watery, and feels sore.

There are three kinds of prickly heat, namely:

Miliaria Crystalline

Obstruction occurs on the surface of the skin so that small bubbles of 1-2 mm are filled with clear fluid. This sweat discharge occurs in the upper layer (miliaria crystalline). The visible symptoms are a small, watery nodule and look shiny.

Miliaria Rubra

This type of sweat sting occurs in the middle layer. The symptoms are skin reddish, itchy, watery, sore, and resemble a scar. These sweat sticks are marked with a small nod (1-2 mm), red usually accompanied by itchy and sore.

Miliaria Profunda

This type of sweat is present in the deeper layers of the skin. Miliaria Profunda usually arises in Miliaria Rubra that occur repeatedly.

In this type of prickly sweat, there are hard white spots and 1-3 mm in size, the skin is not red, but the case is rare. Because of the location of the deeper sweat plugs then the clinical more of a nodule than bubbles filled with fluid.

Symptoms of Prickly heat

Symptoms are complained by miliary sufferers is itchy skin, sore and skin become reddish. In more severe sweat monsters can be found small or lily bubbles containing water.

Repeated scratching can cause scratchy scars. Skin lesions are usually seen in areas covered by clothing such as chest, back, and depressed areas or clogged clothes.

Prickly heat occurs due to several things, such as:

  • High air humidity and heat that stimulates the production of sweat
  • Clothing that is too tight, so the child’s body temperature increases and sweats
  • The child has a fever and sweats a lot
  • Skin hygiene is lacking

Various factors above can be modified to reduce complaints of prickly heat. Also, Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria are also believed to play a role in the occurrence of prickly heat

Treatment of Prickly heat

There is no special treatment for prickly heat. A sweet pick is usually handled with proper skin care. Avoid hot air and wear loose clothing and absorb sweat. Use calamine lotion to relieve affected skin.

If the skin condition is accompanied by secondary infection seen from the pus or pus on the skin, then antibiotics may be considered. In skin lesions that are reddish and itchy, can be given a low potency hydrocortisone cream. When itching is very disturbing, antihistamines may be considered. The use of ointments and medications should be monitored for use by doctors.

Prevention of Prickly heat

Some steps to prevent prickly heat such as:

  • Avoid exposure to heat. When having to travel outside the home, use an umbrella or a hat to prevent excessive heat exposure.
  • Use cotton and lose clothing that absorbs sweat. If the clothes are already wet with sweat, replace them with new clothes.
  • If sweating, bathe with cold water. If possible, work and move in a room with cool air or with air conditioning.
  • Use calamine lotion to soothe and reduce skin irritation.
